As a former Assistant Attorney General and former Assistant Public Defender, I have been on both sides of the field, the prosecution and defense. The State of Florida is where the Gideon v. Wainwright case arose and provided all people charged with a criminal offense the ability to have a court appointed attorney (if one cannot afford the costs of a private attorney). Today, this has become the State of Florida Public Defender system. As a former APD (assistant public defender) I was in the everyday battles securing freedom for those accused of a crime.
The Public Defender system in Florida has become saturated with too many cases. Most times the APD’s do not have the sufficient time in the day to adequately prepare a proper legal defense for those charged with a crime. The APD’s usually are new young lawyers learning to become accomplished trial attorneys. A person accused of a crime should not play with his freedom and liberty. Here, in the United States we have 5% of the world’s population but incarcerate 25% of the world’s population (the highest incarceration rate in the world). An excerpt from “The Prison Crisis/American Civil Liberties Union” at aclu.org: “Since 1970, our prison population has risen 700%. One in 99 adults in the USA are behind bars. The highest rate in American history. One in 31 adults are under some form of probation.”
A trial proceeding before a Judge and Jury is a complex litigation procedure that encompasses various intricate steps. An experienced litigator can provide you a chance to ultimately reach a not guilty verdict. Attorney Carlos A. Ivanor was selected to the Top 100 Trial Attorneys in the United States.
